Receiving a Record of Deeds and Entering Heaven or Hell

God Almighty says:

{And We have fastened every man's fate to his neck, and We will produce for him on the Day of Resurrection a record which he will find wide open. [13] Read your record. Sufficient is yourself against you this Day as accountant. [14]} [Al-Isra'].

We have bound every person's deeds, whether good or evil, to their necks, and have made them like a chain around their necks, so that they will never leave them. {And We will bring forth for him on the Day of Resurrection a record}, which is what the guardian angels have recorded of their deeds. {He will see it}, meaning: he will see that record {spread out}, meaning: open and presented to him so that he may read it and know what is in it.

And it will be said to him, "Read your record."

On that day, he who was not a reader in this world will read it.

The servant will remember all his deeds and what was written for him, as if he had done them at that moment. Therefore, they said:

{Woe to us! What is this record that leaves out nothing small or great but that it has recorded it?}

{Sufficient is yourself against you this Day as a reckoner.} That is, an accountant. He made himself an accountant because when he sees all of his deeds written down on the Day of Resurrection, and sees the reward for his deeds written down justly, with nothing less than his reward and nothing more than his punishment, he will submit, humble himself, be humble, and confess, and he will have no argument or denial.

God Almighty says:

But as for he who is given his record in his right hand [7], he will be given an easy reckoning [8] and will return to his family, rejoicing [9]. But as for he who is given his record behind his back [10], he will call for destruction [11] and will burn in a Blaze [12] (Al-Inshiqaq).

But as for he who is given his record in his right hand, and he is a believer in his Lord, he will be given an easy reckoning and will return to his family in Paradise, rejoicing.

But as for he who is given his record from behind his back, and he is a disbeliever in God, he will call for destruction and destruction and will enter the Fire. He was happy and arrogant with his family in this world, not thinking about the consequences. He thought that he would never return to his Creator for judgment.

God Almighty says:

{On that Day you will be exposed; nothing of you will be hidden. [18] As for he who is given his record in his right hand, he will say, "Here, read my record. [19] Indeed, I thought that I would meet my account." [20] So he will be in a pleasant life. [21] In a lofty garden, [22] whose fruits are within easy reach. [23] Eat and drink in happiness for what you put forth in the days gone by. [24] And as for he who is given his record in his left hand, he will say, "Oh, would that I had not been given my record [25] and that I did not know what my account would be. [26] Oh, would that it had been the final judgment." [27]} [Al-Haqqah]

For every servant is a record, and when the servants are gathered together, these records will scatter until each record falls into the hand of its companion. Some of them will take it with their right hand, and that is the one who is saved.

And some of them will have their left hand folded behind their backs, and they will take it, and that is the wretched one who will perish.

As for the one who is given his record in his right hand, he will say to everyone he meets, "Here, read my record!" This is because he believes that there is nothing in it that would displease him. "I thought that I would meet my reckoning." That is, he was certain that he would be held accountable for his deeds and rewarded for them, so he avoided the forbidden things and strove to obey God Almighty.

"He will be in a pleasant life," meaning one that is pleasing in a lofty Paradise, whose palaces are beautiful, whose pleasures are everlasting, and whose fruits are within easy reach, as God Almighty has informed us.

"Eat and drink in pleasure for what you did in the past days," meaning, "This was your reward, and your effort was appreciated." What is meant by "the past days" is the past, which are the days of this world. This is how God speaks to us about this world while we are still in it. He speaks to us about it in the past tense because its end is near.

(And as for he who is given his record in his left hand)

He believed that he would not return to God nor would he be resurrected. His death, when he saw what he had not taken into account, he found nothing but to wish for death after death had been more hateful to him than anything else, so he said: I wish it was the final judgment that would end his existence entirely so that he would be nothing after it. Then he regretted not benefiting from his wealth or his position, so he said: My wealth has not availed me, my power has perished from me. This is a truth that the Qur’an has often reminded the wealthy of, but they have forgotten it or pretended to ignore it.

The Reward for the Deeds of Believers and Disbelievers

God Almighty says:

{Whoever brings a good deed will have ten times the like thereof, and whoever brings an evil deed will not be recompensed except with the like thereof, and they will not be wronged.} [Al-An'am: 160]

On the authority of Hammam ibn Munabbih, on the authority of Abu Hurairah (may God be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “When one of you improves his Islam, every good deed he does will be recorded for him as ten times the like thereof, up to seven hundred times the like thereof, and every bad deed he does will be recorded for him as the like thereof, until he meets God Almighty.”

The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

“God Almighty says: Whoever brings a good deed will have ten times the like thereof or more, and whoever brings an evil deed will be recompensed with the like thereof, or I will forgive. And whoever draws near to Me…” And whoever comes to Me walking, I will come to him running. And whoever meets Me with the earth full of sins, not associating anything with Me, I will meet him with the like of it forgiveness.”

The reward of the believer for his good deeds in this world and the Hereafter

And the reward of the unbeliever in this world is hastened

Anas ibn Malik said:

The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: "Allah does not wrong a believer for a good deed he is given in this world and for which he is rewarded in the Hereafter. As for the unbeliever, he is fed with the good deeds he did for Allah in this world, until when he reaches the Hereafter, he has no good deeds for which he can be rewarded."

The Muslims are the last of the nations and the first to be held accountable

Abdullah ibn Abbas said: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:

We are the last of the nations and the first to be held accountable. It will be said: Where is the unlettered nation and its Prophet?

We are the last and the first

(i.e., the last of the nations and the first to be held accountable) (Sahih)

The Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, informed us of the blessings that God Almighty will bestow upon his nation in the Hereafter. This includes what is stated in this hadith, where he, may God bless him and grant him peace, said: "We are the last of the nations," meaning the last of them in existence in time, "and the first to be held accountable" on the Day of Resurrection. "It will be said: Where is the illiterate nation and its Prophet?" "We are the last," in this worldly life, "the first," meaning the first to be held accountable and enter Paradise, and the first in status and honor on the Day of Resurrection.

For God Almighty says:

He who bears injustice will fail.

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

Whoever has wronged his brother—regarding his honor or anything else—should seek his forgiveness today, before there will be no dinar or dirham.

If he has any good deeds, they will be taken from him in proportion to his wrongdoing. If he has no good deeds, some of his companion's bad deeds will be taken and placed on him. Narrated by al-Bukhari.

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When the believers are saved from the Fire, they will be detained by a bridge between Paradise and Hell, where they will settle the grievances they committed in this world until they are purified and refined, and permission will be given to them to enter Paradise. Narrated by al-Bukhari.

The Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

God Almighty said:

(Say, "O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of God. Indeed, God forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.")

"Surat Az-Zumar, Verse 53"

God Almighty said:

(And whoever does evil or wrongs himself but then seeks forgiveness from God will find God Forgiving and Merciful.) "

(Surat An-Nisa, verse 110)

And God Almighty said:

Your Lord has prescribed mercy for Himself.

[Al-An'am: 54]

And God Almighty said:

And My mercy encompasses all things.

[Al-A'raf: 156]

And God Almighty said:

Your mercy and knowledge encompass all things.[Ghafir: 7]

And God Almighty said:

But if they deny you, then say, "Your Lord is the possessor of vast mercy, and His punishment cannot be repelled from the criminal people." [Al-An'am: 147]

On the authority of Abu Hurairah, on the authority of the Prophet The Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, said: “God wrote in a book on the day He created the heavens and the earth: ‘My mercy prevails over my wrath.’”

On the authority of Abu Hurairah, the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, said: “God has one hundred mercies, of which He has distributed mercy among all of creation, through which they show compassion to one another, through which they show compassion to one another, and through which wild animals show compassion to their young. He has reserved ninety-nine mercies through which He will show mercy to His servants on the Day of Resurrection.”
